MVCCT was founded in 1980 as a not-for-profit organization to provide area youth with quality theatrical experiences that are educational, creative, engaging and supportive. Through the use of hands-on learning of the theatrical arts, MVCCT offers children, ages 3-18, the opportunity to enhance their development---building self-confidence, character, self-expression, autonomy and responsibility.
MVCCT strives to stimulate and enhance the cultural life of young people by offering a creative outlet that helps them to develop poise, independence, and accountability through self-expression. Numerous studies clearly indicate the value of arts education in contributing to the emotional and educational development of young people. Research has shown that participation in arts activities is linked to higher academic performance, more community service, a higher level of self-confidence and discipline, and improved social skills.
Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre is a children’s theatre with the primary goal of enhancing the cultural life of the Northern Virginia area by offering a stimulating, creative, and supportive outlet to children and youth, helping them build self confidence and character, while developing self expression, independence, and responsibility.
MVCCT's programs are twofold: each year three to four productions are presented, directed by professionals and featuring children in all roles. Additionally MVCCT has an active education program which includes 1. After-School programs in Fairfax County Public Schools (both PTA sponsored and outreach/grant based); 2. Spring Break Camp; and 3. Summer Camp.
MVCCT is committed to reaching those who may not be able to afford the tuition for productions, classes and camps by offering need-based scholarships to qualified participants. All of this is accomplished by a volunteer board of directors with the support of only two year-round paid staff members, professional contracted employees, and a host of parent volunteers. The 'community' in the name of the organization is truly reflective of how MVCCT functions.
Since 1980, MVCCT has offered Northern Virginia exceptional stage productions and educational programs in the performing arts. We pledge to offer our children quality creative arts experiences for years to come. Click here for a listing of MVCCT's production history!
We are proud to be recipients of grants from the Arts Council of Fairfax County, the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additionally a variety of local businesses and individuals support our programs.
The success of MVCCT is largely due to the enormous support we receive from the community and we wish to thank the many people who have contributed to this effort. To the parents who drive their children to and from classes and rehearsals and to those volunteers who perform a myriad of tasks which include sewing costumes, building sets, selling refreshments and cleaning up when it's all over - thank you. Additionally, we acknowledge those financial supporters who provide the resources we need to survive.
We could not survive without your generous support. Even supplemented by significant amounts of volunteer help, our summer drama camp tuition and production ticket sales do not cover the expense of providing professional quality theatre and education for the children of our community. We need your help as we continue in our endeavors to launch new seasons and expand our educational offerings. The return to the community in wholesome recreation and family entertainment is well worth your investment. Contributed support also enables us to provide scholarships to those in our community who cannot afford to participate.
Lastly, but most importantly, we express our appreciation to the audiences who have faithfully attended the theatre's performances through the years. Your applause for the children's efforts is what it's all about.
